Afridi was critical of the Pakistani government, the Taliban, and the patriarchal nature of Pakistani society. In June 2012, she told journalists she was being threatened. Her friends and colleagues suspected the threats originated with FATA Taliban militants. On 5 July 2012, as Afridi left her home in the Khyber tribal area to go to work in Hayatabad a suburb of Peshawar, she was shot once in the head and twice in the neck by two motorcyclists, who afterwards escaped. The original idea behind the series came from the pop star Haroon for an Iphone game called “Burka Revenge”, and later a decision was taken to make it into an animated series.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Laaltain, he said: “There seems to be this presumption in the public eye that we have taken inspiration from the Malala incident, whereas truth is that we had this idea back in April of 2012, long before Malala was shot by Taliban. Our script was ready in May 2012 and animation had started back then, an episode normally takes between 4 and 6 weeks to complete, so to say this has been inspired by Malala is wildly inaccurate.
The policy of dissociation from Malala is ironic and could have been adopted to avoid any controversy because Malala has been a subject of criticism from right wing sections of the society.

The power of the voice of women frightens them. And that is why they killed 14 innocent medical students in the recent attack in Quetta. And that is why they killed many female teachers and polio workers in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa and FATA. That is why they are blasting schools every day. Because they were and they are afraid of change, afraid of the equality that we will bring into our society.
